What I want to be when I grow up!

Growing up, you start forming ideas early on about the job that you want to have when you get older.  If you ask most children what they want to be “when they grow up,” they will likely rattle off a list of some of the more exciting and well known jobs…Police Officer, Fireman, Astronaut, etc.  Early on in my childhood, I thought that I wanted to be an Archaeologist!

By the time you reach the end of high school, the pressure is really on to pick a field of study.  This was a decision I struggled with for years.  I just couldn’t decide what I wanted to be and doing one job for the rest of my life seemed like a big decision.  In my early 20’s, I dabbled in some Psychology classes at the UofM, but quickly got frustrated with the long term goal of getting my PhD.  Therefore, I bounced around doing assorted different jobs, including working as a Secretary and a Pizza Delivery Driver.

In 2003, gas prices were rising and Pizza delivery wasn’t paying off anymore, so I needed to find something else.  I went for an interview for a temporary Receptionist/Secretary position at JDR to work during Tammy’s maternity leave.  Luckily, I got the job…but quickly found that I had bitten off more than I could chew.  I came to work for JDResources with very little prior technology knowledge and without any idea that Recruiters even existed in the world.  In the past 5 years, I have learned a lot, and I owe it all to my position here.

Now, I work as a Technology Recruiter and New Media Developer for JDR and I couldn’t be happier in my career path.  I was fortunate enough to “fall into” my line of work and to have mentors who work hard and are truly passionate about their trade.  I find being a Recruiter extremely challenging, but also very rewarding.  There is no greater feeling than knowing that you have helped to make someone’s life better.

After 5 years, I have no intentions of ever leaving JDR.  In this company, I have found a home full of wonderful people and finally figured out…what I want to be when I grow up!
